Shelby Casner will begin her teaching career in a third grade classroom this fall at Madison Elementary. However, she is no stranger to the building.
While attending Central College, the Indianola native was able to student teach first and third grade at different times. Sara Blom served as her mentor at Madison, and she was able to meet the other third grade teachers in the building.
Casner spent a great deal of time volunteering in the schools and working with students. She has always wanted to be a teacher, preferably in grades K-5, because of the joy of seeing kids learn and grow.
Coming into the classroom on the first day is not making her nervous, but the uncertainty of how school will look in the fall, because of COVID-19, does. She hopes that school will return to normal, so that students, teachers and everyone can gather together in the same place.
Either way, she was drawn to Pella because of its proximity to her hometown and all of the great people she has met and the friends she has made. In her spare time, she enjoys being outside, arts, crafts and reading.
