Pella Police Officer Zach Nelson was among the most recent graduates of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
The class was a little different than usual, as dormitories at ILEA were closed in March due to COVID-19. This forced the recruits to finish their academy training online. Nelson said it was a little disappointing, as he and his classmates would have liked to have had a graduation ceremony. But it was also a blessing, as he was able to complete academy training while living at home. Nelson enjoyed the academy training and compliments his instructors for the great job they did.
Nelson is originally from Urbandale. He has been training in the field with Officer Boertje and will be trained by Officer DeSchenkel on the night shift in the coming weeks. Thus far, he has been impressed with his fellow officers, the department and the community.
A couple of weeks ago, Nelson officially became a resident of Pella and has been happy here ever since. Everyone has been very welcoming to the new officer, and he is eager to continue to serve.
