CEDAR RAPIDS — For the first time since 2004, the Central College women’s tennis team defeated Coe College Saturday in a 7-2 decision.

Central (7-6) also beat Webster University (Mo.) 5-4 earlier in the day.

Against the Kohawks, the Dutch got off to a hot start by sweeping all three doubles matches. Then Alex Griggs (freshman, Knoxville) powered for a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 doubles and Sami Thompson (senior, Pella) followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory to put the match on ice.

“We came out of the blocks fast at No. 2 and 3 doubles and No. 1 came from behind to win,” coach Ryun Ferrell said. “Then we won our first two singles matches handedly and pretty fast.:

Sophomore Alyssa Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) went 4-0 in her first action of the season having played volleyball during the fall season. She won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles against Coe and 6-4, 6-0 against webster. Playing No. 2 doubles with Karleigh Schilling (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids, Prairie HS) for 8-3 wins against both teams.

“Last year it took Alyssa awhile to get her first singles win,” Ferrell said. “She came right out of the blocks today.”

Thompson was also unbeaten in singles with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Webster. Central won both No. 3 doubles matches. Griggs and Thompson won 8-6 against Webster before Griggs and Macy Scharff (sophomore, Oskaloosa) won 8-1 against Coe.

Maddie Hartley (sophomore, Clarinda) won 4-6, 6-0, 14-12 at No. 2 singles against Coe and won No. 1 doubles 8-7 against the Kohawks with partner Bronwyn Metcalf (sophomore, Pella). Schilling also had a 6-0, 6-2 win against Webster.

The Dutch are set to play St. Olaf College (Minn.) next Friday at 4 p.m. in Pella.

“This team is pretty motivated,” Ferrell said. “They’re excited after today.”
