The Pella Christian and Pleasantville varsity girls’ basketball teams met in a Class 2A, Region 7 playoff game Tuesday night, with the Eagles coming out on top 36-29.

The Eagles ran into some bad luck in the early going as the rim rejected at least three shots. Meanwhile, the defense was keeping the Trojans from even attempting many shots. It wasn’t until there was around 4:40 left in the first quarter before either team scored.

Malorie McKinney sunk a pair of layups in before Emri Agre sunk a three pointer to put the Eagles on the board. Agre hit one more, but with the Eagles’ foul trouble, they were down 8-6 at the end of the first.

Allison Van Gorp quickly tied the game for the Eagles, but McKinney struck right back for the Trojans. The Eagles gained their first lead through five quick points from Chloe Morgan.

On the Pleasantville side, McKinney was almost all alone in scoring for the orange and black. Only two of the team’s points were not scored by her at this point, they came from Josie Hutchings. Anna DeBoef hit a free throw for the Trojans, but the Eagles went into halftime with a 17-15 lead.

The third quarter belonged to the Eagles. While the contest remained defensive, Pleasantville’s outside shooting suffered. Morgan took full advantage of being left open quite often in the third to rack up the points while the PC defense achieved several turnovers. Pleasantville could only muster three points in the third and the Eagles went into the final stanza up 25-20.

Van Gorp firmly established her dominance under the rim while Agre’s outside shooting continued the Eagles’ offensive advantage. The Trojans were down by 10 points most of the quarter. One of the true highlights for Pleasantville in the fourth was two outstanding three-pointers from Rachel Harvey.

Pella Christian was strong on ball control and walked out with a 36-29 victory. They are now set to face North Linn at East Marshall High School on Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., in the next round of the playoffs.

Morgan finished the game with 16 points, followed by Agre with 12 and Van Gorp with eight for the Eagles. McKinney finished with 17 points for Pleasantville, with six from Harvey, two from Josie Hutchings, two from Faith Vanderhart and one from Breanna Benge.
