The Twin Cedars girls’ basketball team won in the first round of the Bluegrass Conference Tournament by defeating Mormon Trail 54-25 on Jan. 27.
The teams were neck-and-neck after the first quarter, with the Sabers up 11-10. Following that, the blue and white defense refused to let Mormon trail get into the double digits again in a single quarter.
Head Coach Trent Verwers says it was a rough first half, but the bench in the third quarter sparked the team and separated the lead. Freshman Rylee Dunkin, who had a broken arm earlier in the season, was back to her old self and contributed seven points.
The Sabers also had 10 steals in the game, which helped. Verwers noted that his team was playing with a lot of confidence.
Chloe Swank led the Sabers with 15 points, Brooke Roby had 14.
Tonight (Thursday, Jan. 30), the girls play Ankeny Christian Academy at home. It is senior night, with the games beginning at 5:30 p.m. The senior ceremony will take place after the girls’ game.
