PELLA — Sophomore Will DeHaan (DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) won as an individual and on a relay team for the Central College men’s track and field team a the Dutch Athletics Classic Saturday.
Central was fifth in the team standings after totaling 73.5 points. Central Methodist University (Mo.) was the team champion with 104.5.
DeHaan led a strong contingent of Dutch runners in the mile, winning with a time of four minutes, 25.40 seconds. Nate Sanders (junior, Waukee) also finished in third (4:27.55)
“It was definitely exciting to see Will step up this weekend,” Sturman said.
DeHaan also ran a leg of the winning the 4×400-meter relay team, that crossed the line in 3:29.85. Carter Tryon (sophomore, Winterset), Danny Devenuto (sophomore, Plainfield, Ill., North HS) and Cory Suedmeier (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS). Suedmeier was second in the 300 meters (37.76 seconds).
“It was an exciting race and a good way to end the meet,” Sturman said. “We have a little ways to go in terms of the time we ran the race in.”
High jumper Drake Lewis (sophomore, Lathrop, Mo.) was second with a clearance of six feet, 7 inches. Brock Lewis (sophomore, Lathrop, Mo.) was third in the triple jump (43-3.75).
“Brock and Drake are continuing to get better each week,” Sturman said. “Drake is so close to clearing a height that will qualify him for nationals.”
Freshman Lucas Heitz (Adel, ADM HS) crossed the line in 8.82 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Weight thrower Theo Baldus (sophomore, St. Ansgar) was third with a toss of 50-2.
“Theo had a huge PR,” Sturman said. “Lucas continues to get better each week as he figures different events out.”
Central travels to the Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska on Friday.
