The Pella High Little Dutch wrestling team traveled to Ottumwa Tuesday night to take on the Bulldogs and Davis County Mustangs. While the Dutch fell to Ottumwa, they topped Davis County.
Head Coach Jay Pike says the duel with Ottumwa was pretty close. The Dutch lost only 46-33. Pella responded by coming back as a solid team to defeat the Mustangs 42-33.
“We had a number of guys that had great bouts, but Ryan VanDonselaar, Nathan Born and Braydon Peterson all went 2-0 with two falls,” Pike said. “Ryan Hancock and Ethan Milligan both won two matches as well.”
The Dutch’s lead over Davis County was only three points heading into the final three matches. The last match of the night was at 106, which Pella had to forfeit. Pike says it was up to Jordan DeRuiter who picked up a big win in dramatic fashion, followed by Peterson pinning his man to put the Dutch up by 15. That was enough breathing room for the Dutch to secure the win, despite the forfeit.
The Dutch are set to take part in a meet at Knoxville Thursday night, Dec. 5, against Nevada and Knoxville.
