Large number attend initial wrestling meeting

The page of high school sports is turning to winter. Pleasantville High School Head Wrestling Coach Heath DeForest recently held his team’s initial interest meeting, and there were 22 potential grapplers in attendance.
“That’s a big number for us,” DeForest said. The Trojans will remain a green, young team, but DeForest fully expects state qualifiers Matt Kaufman and Cale Anthony to return this season. Both are still recovering from football season.
DeForest has high hopes for the team, but he is realistic about the Trojans’ chances this year. He liked the number of students interested in wrestling, but challenges remain to get competitors in every weight class. Even when that happens, the West Central Athletic Conference presents strong competition.
This is the Trojans’ second year in the WCAC and DeForest believes Pleasantville will be able to compete with the rest of the conference. There are many good wrestlers and coaches throughout but DeForest will see where the Trojans are and make adjustments before and during the season.
Pleasantville’s varsity team opens the season on Dec. 5 at Martensdale-St. Marys. Home meets this year include Dec. 10, Jan. 18 and Jan. 23.
