PELLA— A pair of Central College football players and one men’s soccer player were named American Rivers Conference players of the week Monday afternoon.
Quarterback Blaine Hawkins (junior, Ankeny) won his second offensive player of the week honor while kicker Jon Alberts (senior, Huntley, Ill.) was selected for the fourth time as a special teams player.
Defender Taylor Petkovich (senior, Littleton, Colo., Heritage HS) was chosen as the defensive player of the week for the second time this season.
Hawkins set a school record with 421 passing yards on just 24 completions. He connected for five touchdown passes. He added 78 rushing yards and a touchdown, leading the offense to a school record 696 total yards in a 51-34 win over Simpson College.
Alberts started the scoring against Simpson for Central with a 32-yard field goal before going 6-for-6 on PATs. Three of his nine kickoffs went for touchbacks as well.
Central hosts Wartburg College Saturday at 1 p.m. from Pella’s Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
Petkovich played 62 minutes of Central’s 5-0 shutout over Buena Vista University last Tuesday. He helped Central pick up its seven shutout of the season. He added his first goal of the season in the 12th minute.
The No. 1 seed in the American Rivers Conference tournament, the Dutch host No. 5 Luther College at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. The match will be at Central’s A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex.
