Student count up at Pella Schools

The Pella School Board reviewed the number of students in each grade at its regular meeting Monday night. On the first day of school, the total number of students enrolled was up from last year.

According to documents provided by the district, there were 2,344 students enrolled in the Pella Public School system, compared to 2,315 last year. The students going into seventh grade saw the biggest jump, with 11 more classmates than last year.

The board approved a request for four high school students to attend the Space Settlement Design Competition in March 2020. Erin Yoder will serve as the chaperone for the trip. The competition will be held at the NASA-Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

A request for additional “spending authority” from the School Budget Review Committee for any special education deficit that may occur. This year, the deficit is $738,889 compared to $616,921 for 2018.  A similar request was made for excess LEP costs for serving English language learners during the 2018-19 school year. This year, the district is requesting $45,126.

Financial reports for the district overall were approved to be submitted to the Department of Education. It details the assets, liabilities, revenue and expenditures in all funds of the district.

The board also approved the hires of:

  • Kaylee Willadsen – HS Show Choir Accompanist – AcaPella
  • Chandra Clark – HS Show Choir Accompanist – Bravo

The next board meeting will be a work session with legislators on Oct. 14 at 4:30 p.m.
