Carla Smith served as an assistant Knoxville High School varsity softball coach last season. Activities Director Ryan Paulsen is recommending her to take over the head coaching position this year.

“She had an extensive playing career in high school as 5-year Varsity starter and also playing collegiately for 4 years.  She then transitioned to coaching and has 4 years of high school softball coaching experience – 2 at Creston and 2 for us,” Paulsen wrote in a memo to the school board.

“Carla does a great job of building relationships with players and she understands this is the foundation of having a successful program.  Being in the building and around our players throughout the year will give our softball program a huge boost as players regularly – and will continue to do – just drop by her room throughout the school year to talk.  She has the respect of players, she is easy to approach and work with, and her personality allows her to relate to and reach all types of learners,” Paulsen continued.

The board is also expected to approve all spring and summer coaches. The full list can be found here. The board will meet Monday, Sept. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at 309 West Main.
