The Melcher-Dallas Saints’ softball team fell one game short of making it to the State Tournament in Fort Dodge, as they were bested by the Wayne Falcons Monday night, 8-0.

Saint batters struggled to connect with any pitches hurled by Falcons’ ace Sterling Berndt. Berndt struck out 11 in the game and also got her offense going in the bottom of the first. She reached second on an error before being driven in two batters later to go up 1-0. Wayne added two more to go up 3-0 before the Saints got their first hit.

DoraMae Bennett got a single in the third, but was stranded.

Emilie Krpan was strong in the circle and ended the game with 12 strikeouts. The defense behind her struggled, which allowed Wayne plenty of base runners and opportunities to extend their innings and lead.

In the top of the fourth, Krpan battled Berndt to a full count before singling to right. Two batters later, Kynser Reed hit a strong double to right, but it was not quite enough to get Krpan’s courtesy runner, Kenzie Gibson, across. The next two batters struck out, which stranded another two Saint runners.

Wayne piled on in the bottom of the fourth with a triple, a bunt and a double bringing three more runs across. Two more doubles in the bottom of the fifth increased the lead to 7-0.

Melcher-Dallas managed a walk and got a runner through a hit batsman in the fifth and sixth, respectively. Both were stranded.

A home run in the bottom of the sixth by Wayne’s Tilley Reagan capped off the scoring to give us a final of 8-0.

Though the season came to a close in an undesirable way for the Saints, the team had a record-setting 27 wins on the season, to only six losses. Final individual and team stats for the season were unavailable as of this original post. Congratulations to the Saints on an outstanding season!
