Fireworks will need a fundraiser

Absent from this year’s Fourth of July celebration in Pleasantville was the Firecracker 5K. The race was a significant fundraiser for the City’s fireworks display, and another fundraiser will be necessary to replace it.

City Manager Joe Mrstik reports that the City contributes to the fireworks display through its local option sales and services tax money. However, there is not enough to pay for an entire display.

The Firecracker 5K may still be an option for next year, but it needs a new organizer. Pam Mohr has retired from the project. If you are interested in taking over the Firecracker 5K, or have another fundraiser in mind, contact Mrstik or Fire Chief Jordan Van Ness.

Mrstik would also like to remind residents that the only date people can shoot off fireworks within the City limits is July 4. Please be respectful of combat veterans, pets and those with post-traumatic stress disorder when using them. Also be sure to have a bucket of water nearby to douse expended fireworks to prevent tragedy.
