Pleasantville girls at 13-3


Going into tonight’s doubleheader vs. ACGC, the Pleasantville Trojan varsity girls’ softball team is at an impressive 13-3 on the season.

In the team’s most recent outing, the Trojans downed Van Meter, 3-0. Coach Jan Haugen called Van Meter a “very good team with great pitching.”

Van Meter’s Macy Blongren went the distance scattering 7 hits and striking out 8.  Trojan pitcher Abby DeJoode got the win, striking out 6, walking 2 and allowing 3 hits for the night.

Pleasantville scored 1 in the 5th when Abby DeJoode doubled off the left field fence and scored on Josie Sowers’ single.  Then in the 4th, it was Sydney McKinney leading off with a single followed by cleanup hitter McKenzie McGriff’s double for a 2-0 lead.  McGriff then scored the final run on Faith Vanderhart’s single.  Final score 3-0.

Two big victories came June 8 at Council Bluffs. In game 1, it was the Trojans coming out on top against Abraham Lincoln by score of 12-4 in 5 innings. Pleasantville scored early with 2 in the first and 2 in second inning for a 4-0 lead. A.L came back with 2 in the 3rd but the Trojans exploded in the bottom of inning for 6 more runs to make it 10-2.

The final saw each team with 2 more runs as Faith Vanderhart got the win going the distance scattering 8 hits while walking 3 and striking out 8. Trojans tallied 16 hits with Josie Sowers leading the way with a triple, 2 singles and 2 RBIs followed by Amber McKinney’s 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.

Game two was against Council Bluffs Lewis Central and the Trojans started in the first inning and never looked back. They hammered out 18 hits in 4 innings for a final of 16-1. Amber McKinney went 4-4 pounding out 3 doubles driving in 3 runs.  Sydney McKinney also had 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Hannah Gibson also went two for three with a home run to left field.  Winning pitcher was Abby DeJoode going 4 innings, walking 2 and striking out 6.

Two days earlier, the girls took a double header from Woodward-Granger. In game 1, Abby DeJoode was in the circle, throwing a 1 hitter.  She faced only 14 batters in the 4-inning contest. Of those, she struck out 10 and walked 1.  Josie Sowers went 4-for-4, crossing the plate 4 times. Bridgette McKinney got it going in the 2nd as she took a pitch to left field, homering with 1 on to put the Trojans ahead for good. Abby DeJoode also homered in the 4th when 7 more runs were put on the board. Pleasantville had 15 hits for the game.

Game 2 was a bit tighter as Woodward took a 2-0 lead in the top of first. Taylor Foley got on in the 2nd and scored along with Hannah Gibson on three straight hits from the top of order. Sowers’ single, Amber McKinney’s double and Syd McKinney’s single produced 5 more runs.  Another run in the 3rd and 4th and 2 more in the 6th – including a solo homer by Gibson, made it a final 9-4 win.

There were 11 team hits and Faith Vanderhart got the win. Faith went the full 7, giving up 8 hits while striking out 6 and walking 0.
